Chapter 1
Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book,called True Stories from Nature,about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal.Here is a copy of the drawing.
In the boot it said:” Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move,and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.”

第一章
六岁那年，我在书上看到一幅精美的图画，那是一本关于原始森林的书，名叫“真实的故事”。图上画的是一条蟒蛇正在吞食一头猛兽。这是那幅画的摹本。书上这样写道：“蟒蛇会把猎物整个吞进去，根本不咀嚼。之后，它们就无法动弹了，在长达六个月的时间里，边睡觉边消化食物
I pondered deeply, then,over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with the colored pencil I successed in marking my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:
I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.
But the answered:”Frighten?Why should any one be frightened by a hat?”
My draawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a hoa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it. I made another drawing: I drew the inside of the boa constrictor,so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:

我画的根本就不是一顶帽子，而是一条正在消化大象的蟒蛇。大人们看不懂，我只好又画了另一幅：把蟒蛇肚皮里的样子画出来，这样大人就能看清楚了。他们总是需要别人解释。我的二号作品是这样的：
